Tetsuro Tanba was the third son born into a prestigious family of Yakushi (pharmacists) with a thousand-year history dating back to the Heian period. He lost his younger sister at the age of seven and kept this secret from everyone until he was 72. "My stepdaughter took my place," he said. This is the untold family story of a man who felt nothing at his father's death and remained silent for 60 years about his sister's death. His grandfather was a first-generation graduate of the Tokyo Imperial University's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and they owned a 2000-tsubo (approximately 6600 square meter) mansion in Komagome. Despite being born into a family where he was driven around in a Rolls-Royce, Tetsuro wrote that he was "an insignificant presence, whether he was there or not." His father never scolded his older brothers, but he constantly scolded Tetsuro no matter what he did. During the war, he was treated as a "disabled soldier" due to his stutter, but miraculously, his stutter disappeared on the day the war ended.
