Union Pacific Big Boy and Reading 2102, July 1 2026

I joined the crowds on July 1st to see Union Pacific's 4-8-8-4 Big Boy run from Scranton to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. The crowds were huge everywhere, despite the heat. 0:05 In the yards at Steamtown in Scranton. The 4014 had been parked next to Steamtown's Big Boy No. 4012. Here it moves ahead, then backs down onto its train. 2:35 Big Boy and its train backs into Pittston as it switches onto Reading & Northern tracks. 3:02 On this double-track section of the Reading & Northern in Pittston, 4-8-4 No. 2102 has halted just short of the Oak Street crossing, waiting for Big Boy to pass. After it has passed, the 2102 follows, slipping several times on the upgrade. 5:05 Big Boy charges through Mountain Top. 6:12 The sun is low as Big Boy makes its stately way through White Haven.
