2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season Animation

To kick off hurricane season, let's revisit what occurred in the Atlantic basin 10 years ago, and take a critical look back on it. Back in 2016, we would see the first above average season in 3 years, with the most notable storm being Matthew. At the end of September, Matthew would form, to its "do not assume you can survive" fame, the terrifying skull satellite image, and more, especially important to note it would threaten the US with its first major hurricane landfall in almost a decade. Now, while that would not materialize, catastrophic impacts were still felt from Haiti to North Carolina, 731 people would die in the wake of Matthew. Other notable storms included Alex, an extremely anomalous January hurricane out by the Azores. Hermine, which would make the first hurricane landfall in Florida since 2005, causing significant impacts up and down the East Coast. Lastly, Otto would strike Nicaragua and Costa Rica as a late-November major hurricane, later crossing over into the East Pacific with it becoming the first storm to do that since 1996.
