How to start a business when you have too many interests.

Creators, entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, freelancers, start-up founders… we’re told all the time to “niche down,” to focus on a single concept or audience or business idea. But there is a radically different approach to building a business. In this video I walk through what it takes to start and build a multipassionate business, one that allows multipotentialites, multi-hyphenates, polymaths and renaissance (wo)men to embrace their curiosity and work with their energy, not against it. These aren’t hypothetical frameworks - they’re real, tested, and drawn from my own lived experience as a coach, artist, nonprofit executive director, chief product officer, curator, producer, teacher, filmmaker, fundraiser, and now... YouTube creator. If you’re someone with too many ideas, too many interests, or too many creative threads to follow, you’ve probably been told to “pick one thing” more times than you can count. Maybe you’ve felt like a generalist in a specialist world, or like your career has been one long detour. Maybe you’ve tried to follow the rules — focus, niche, specialise — and it just didn’t work for you. In this video, you’ll learn how to build a business that can hold all of you: your diverse skills, your shifting interests, and your need for meaning, freedom and variety. We’ll explore what it means to be a multi-hyphenate entrepreneur in a world that celebrates hyper-focus. And we’ll talk honestly about the challenges too - burnout, overcommitment, identity crises - and how to navigate them with more intention and less guilt. 00:00 The “niche down” fallacy 02:16 Four types of multipassionate business 03:35 The Phoenix Business 06:01 The Slash Business 08:24 The Group Hug Business 10:40 The Just Good Enough Business 12:51 Which business is right for you? 15:20 One final takeaway This video is for anyone who’s ever felt broken for not fitting into one box. It’s for creative generalists, curious freelancers, recovering specialists, and those rebuilding after burnout. It’s for people with ADHD or neurodivergence who feel like they’re constantly switching lanes and want to know how to make that work as a strength. It’s for anyone exploring a portfolio career or trying to start a business without abandoning parts of themselves just to make it work. Inspired by the work of Emily Wapnick and her concept of multipotentiality, this is part framework, part encouragement, part permission slip. You don’t need to find your one thing. You just need to build a business - and a life - big enough to hold all of who you are. * Every fortnight I publish Theory of Change, which offers a different way to see your work and your life, from productivity to purpose, fundraising to friendship, strategy to self. 1,000+ leaders, creators, and social entrepreneurs read it.
