A National Historic Site and, since 2019, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it preserves its countless natural and cultural charms to this day. The city was founded in 1667 around the Church of Our Lady of Remedies, its patron saint. It had great economic importance due to its sugarcane mills (at one time it had over 250), and was considered synonymous with good brandy. After the opening of the Paraty-Cunha Road, and especially after the construction of the Rio-Santos Highway in the 1970s, Paraty became a hub for national and international tourism.
