The World Gold Council predicts that known gold mine deposits could be exhausted by 2050, casting doubt on the future of gold supply. Recycling already accounts for over a quarter (approximately 28%) of the total annual gold supply on the market. Recycled gold comes primarily from jewelry scrap, which accounts for 90% of recycled gold, as well as dental scrap and electronic waste such as microprocessors and cell phones. While gold recycling has a long history and reached a record high of 1,750 tons in 2009, its share of total production has declined in recent years, fluctuating between 1,100 and 1,400 tons per year. The supply of recycled gold increased in the fourth quarter of 2025, closely related to record gold prices. Gold holders are driving the recycling market by selling old jewelry for cash, a trend seen most recently in China and Europe.
