David's Heart is Overwhelmed - Psalm 61

Psalm 61 was written against the backdrop of Absalom's rebellion (who was King David's third son) against King David for his throne. This caused King David to flee from Jerusalem (see 2 Samuel 16 KJV). Absalom eventually met his demise when Joab, one of the commanders of David's army, took three javelines and plunged them into Absalom's heart (2 Samuel 18:14 KJV) David was grieved over the death of his son. The Bible records that King David: "went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!" (2 Samuel 18:33 KJV) In Psalm 61, David cries to the Lord God "From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I." (Psalm 61: 2 KJV) David pleads to the Lord for mercy and truth to preserve him, so that he may perform his vows day after day and sing praise to the Lord forever.
