An Introduction to Hougoumont with Prof. Tony Pollard - Lockdown Lectures
Professor Tony Pollard, Director of the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology at the University of Glasgow, has been leading Waterloo Uncovered’s excavations on the battlefield since 2015. The dig has thrown new light on some of the critical events of the battle and about the people who fought in it. In this lecture, the first in a series, Tony sets the scene for the bitter and bloody fighting that consumed the Chateau of Hougoumont, one of the Duke of Wellington’s key allied positions. Waterloo Uncovered is a registered UK charity that combines a world‐class archaeology project on the battlefield of Waterloo with veteran care and recovery. Working in partnership with some of Europe’s top universities, and through the unique perspective of a team comprised of archaeologists, veterans, and serving soldiers, Waterloo Uncovered aims to understand war and its impact on people — and to educate the public about it.
