Upper and Lower Motor Neuron Lesions | UMN vs LMN, Differences and Mnemonic

Lesson on differences between Upper and Lower Motor Neuron Lesions. Upper motor neurons (UMN) are located within the brain and brainstem and send their axons down the spinal cord to innervate lower motor neurons (LMN). Lower motor neurons (LMN) are located within the ventral horn of the spinal cord and send their axons towards the periphery to innervate skeletal muscles. Lesions in upper and lower motor neurons have characteristic differences. In this lesson you will learn what upper motor neurons and lower motor neurons are, where they are located in the central nervous system and what happens when their is a lesion or damage to them.
