When building your phrases, chord tones can be used as safe target notes and help give your scale movements a sense of purpose and direction. The approaches in this lesson focus on different ways to locate these chord tones on the fretboard. Think of it like connecting the dots. With the chord tones firmly in your mind for each chord in the progression, you'll have that visual point of reference during your solo, so you're less likely to get lost or wander aimlessly through a scale. If scales are the road map, chord tones can be seen as the destinations and "checkpoints" during your journey. Your improvisation skills will also have the grounding they need, allowing you to explore the fretboard freely, while at the same time having those safe points (chord tones) to retreat to and keep your solos connected to the chord progression.
