Herbstforum Altbau 2022: Energiesparkommissar Carsten Herbert - Wärmepumpen im Gebäudebestand

Heat pumps are currently the dominant topic when it comes to replacing heating systems. In his usual entertaining style, energy consultant Carsten Herbert, better known online as the Energy Saving Commissioner, guided the participants of the 2022 Autumn Forum on Old Buildings through the limitations of heat pump use in existing buildings. He demonstrated how to quickly and reliably assess whether a heat pump is feasible and cost-effective, and what needs to be considered. He also discussed the role that air conditioning units can play in heating residential buildings. If Germany wants to move away from fossil fuels, heat pumps and biomass heating systems are unavoidable. However, pellet heating systems and biogas heating systems can only supply heat to a small proportion of households in this country. Therefore, heat pumps, along with heating networks, must make the largest contribution. But can they also be operated efficiently in more or less well-renovated old buildings? Based on research results, the speaker made it clear that this is generally the case for buildings constructed since 1977. For even older, barely renovated residential buildings, however, at least some insulation measures are usually required to ensure that the heat pump can operate efficiently. As a temporary solution, heat pumps can also be used in buildings with high heat requirements, but only as long as the required flow temperature does not exceed 55 degrees Celsius.
