Giovanni Segantini was an Italian painter and one of the leading exponents of Divisionism. He was born in Arco, in the Italian-speaking part of Tyrol, then part of the Austrian Empire, into a family in precarious economic circumstances. Despite the turbulent events of his life following the death of his parents, he managed to gain recognition for his artistic talent in painting at a young age, working in the workshops of renowned artists such as Luigi Tettamanzi, Emilio Longoni, and Vittore Grubicy. During his artistic development, he became drawn to the Divisionist movement. Divisionism is an Italian artistic phenomenon that emerged towards the end of the 19th century, derived from Neo-Impressionism, and is characterized by the separation of colors into individual dots or lines that interact with each other optically.
