What will be the major challenges of electrification in the next twenty years? What are companies really looking for when hiring a young person? And what does it mean to lead the markets of a company like ABB today? We started with these questions to retrace Gianluca Lilli's career path: from management engineering to his early years as a product manager at ABB, to his role as Senior Vice President leading ABB Electrification's markets for Southern Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa. We discussed electrification, starting with concrete topics: energy demand set to grow twice as fast as any other source, the evolution of grids, the role of renewables, and that "silent giant" of hydropower, which could still have a significant impact on Italy, combining pumping and storage as large natural batteries. We also focused on data centers, increasingly central to the country's technological development: how much do they consume—a medium-sized facility like a city of 25,000 inhabitants—and what challenges do they pose in terms of grid stability and infrastructure. We then delved into the relationship between innovation, skills, and the world of work: what companies are looking for in young people today, why capacity matters more than individual technical expertise, and why—looking at patents and the comparison with the United States and China—Italy needs a long-term strategy, capable of thinking twenty years ahead rather than just the news of the day. A conversation to explore the energy transition from a practical perspective, encompassing technology, skills, and long-term choices, culminating in a piece of advice for young people: follow your passion, putting your own contribution first.
