Die unterschiedlichen Stocklängen in den Kampfkünsten - Sinn oder Unsinn?

In this video, I address a question that frequently arises in the field of stick fighting: Why are there different stick lengths in so many martial arts, even though we often talk about the same or a similar stick? This often seems contradictory, especially to beginners. However, in practice, it quickly becomes clear that the length of a stick is never chosen arbitrarily. It is always related to the specific system, the training method, distance work, the area of application, and historical development. In this video, I examine the topic from several perspectives: Irish Stick Fighting (Bataireacht / Shillelagh): Here, the focus is primarily on the practical and historical background. In Ireland, the stick was not only a training tool but also often an everyday object. This is precisely why different lengths developed – depending on the region, material, physique, and application. French Stick Fighting – Canne de combat: In contrast, we see a significantly stronger standardization in France. Here, athletic structure, systematic techniques, and clear rules play a crucial role. This also explains why measurements are often more standardized there. Japanese Jōjutsu: In Japanese Budō, the staff is closely linked to school, tradition, and technical principles. Distance, timing, line of attack, and body mechanics all contribute to determining the optimal length. Here, too, the staff length is part of the system and not simply a matter of preference. My goal with this video is to clearly demonstrate that staff lengths always reflect a specific fighting philosophy. It's not just about centimeters, but about function, strategy, movement logic, and tradition. And at the end, I'll share a personal tip on how you can determine your ideal staff length. And finally, I'll give you a personal tip on how to find out your own ideal staff length. Have we piqued your interest?
