Children fall asleep in their sleeping bags. Next to them... a turtle?! This overnight experience took place at the Muroto Abandoned School Aquarium in Muroto City, Kochi Prefecture. It was designed to create special summer vacation memories for elementary school students in grades 4 through 6. This time, over 160 people applied from Kochi and Tokushima prefectures, and 22 were selected to participate. First, they explored the aquarium at night. The children were fascinated by the different behavior of the creatures compared to daytime. At 10 PM, they tried to sleep, but the turtle remained a constant source of curiosity. On the second day, the children rode mountain bikes along mountain trails. They enjoyed playing in the river under the midsummer sun. For lunch, they had a barbecue by the river, working together to grill the food. On the final day of the overnight experience, an endangered green sea turtle appeared before the children. It had been caught in a fixed net off the coast of Muroto and brought to the abandoned school aquarium. The children worked together to carry it to the beach and release it. Kizuna Yasuoka (11 years old): I made new friends, and it was great to experience different things at the aquarium and do all sorts of things. Nanase Wada (11 years old): When we had a barbecue, everyone cooperated, and even when something got completely burnt, they said, "Okay, I'll eat this, so you eat the unburnt part," which I thought was really nice and heartwarming. A 2-night, 3-day trip where they stayed overnight at the aquarium with new friends and enjoyed the great outdoors. It will surely be an unforgettable summer memory.
