Tascam DP24/32SD Tutorial 13: Midi Sync - old-school

Part 13 - using an external MIDI-sync box to synchronise overdubs. Note these sync boxes can be difficult to find nowadays, but 2nd-hand ones crop up regularly if you are patient. Search for 'midi sync' boxes and make sure they have an audio/smpte in/out and a MIDI in/out. Don't confuse them with DIN Sync or Sync24 units as they use a different sync protocol. Here's a list of MIDI-sync boxes suggested by viewers: Yamaha YMC-10, Philip Rees TS-1, Midiman Syncman, MOTU Micro Express, Tascam MTS-30, Roland SBX-1, JLCooper PPS-2. Please note that some of these can only handle one of the 2 protocols mentioned in the video - basic timing clocks vs. MIDI Time Code (MTC), so check the device you want to sync with can handle this. Some gear can only handle the simple timing clock protocol. Other alternatives are the Korg Volca or Electribe units (the newer ones, not older models such as the ER-1) which I'm informed use an audio-based sync signal so can be recorded/played-back directly - you should be able to use these instead of a MIDI-Sync unit (thanks to @James Weeks & @Orpheus Head for the info). You can confirm this by downloading the relevant user manual and seeing if it has sockets called Sync In/Out separate to the MIDI sockets. Another alternative is to use a DAW to send & receive the sync tones, e.g. Reaper (thanks to @MrPaultheguitar for the info).
