A Few Good Men - Using Agreements to Set Clear Expectations

In this video, we use scenes from the 1992 film A Few Good Men to discuss a topic many service management organizations struggle with, agreements. Leaders and teams are often reluctant to discuss contracts or agreements. But contracts and agreements are not the same thing. Contracts are typically legal and binding. Whereas the goal of agreements is (should be) to clarify who does what, how, and why, so that expectations are clear up front. Most service management failures aren’t caused by missing contracts. They’re caused by unclear, convoluted, or nonexistent agreements. We use A Few Good Men to show how ambiguity, assumptions, and implicit expectations create conflict, and how simple, well-defined agreements can improve delivery, reduce stress and build trust across teams.
