Why German Guns Failed Against This Tank

June 23rd, 1941. A German supply column is advancing when it suddenly comes to a halt. Something is blocking the road. A single Soviet tank. Sitting in the middle of the route. Refusing to move. 37mm rounds bounce off. 50mm rounds bounce off. A tractor sent to tow it away breaks down trying. German infantry attempt to approach on foot, but the tank opens fire and drives them back. For 24 hours, one Soviet tank holds up a German column on a supply route the invasion timetable depends on, because the standard German anti-tank weapons simply do not work. The tank is a KV-1. The Germans have never encountered one in combat before. That summer, on August 19th, 1941, Lieutenant Zinoviy Kolobanov sets up an ambush at a road junction near Krasnogvardeysk. In a single engagement, he destroys 22 German tanks. His KV-1 is hit 135 times without being penetrated. He receives the Order of the Red Banner — not the Hero of the Soviet Union his actions appeared to warrant, for reasons that have never been adequately explained. This is the full story of the KV-1. The Winter War that made it necessary. The armor that standard German weapons could not defeat in 1941. The Kolobanov engagement that remains surprisingly under-documented. The mechanical problems that haunted the program. And the year — roughly one year — when Soviet heavy armor imposed costs on Germany's invasion that the Wehrmacht was completely unprepared to absorb.
