This video is about: How it Happened by Shazaf Fatima Haider Summary in Urdu/Hindi| How it Happened Themes & Characters. Plot Dadi, the matriarchal grandmother of the Bandian family believes that all respectable girls should follow the arranged marriage route and doing a love marriage is equal to sinning in the family. The sage advice she gives in this regard is both funny and opens our eyes to the hypocritical nature of our society. The plot is based on the tussle that arises when her grandchildren decide to opt for love marriages. Characters The plot is no doubt centered around a very important theme and issue of our society however it is in the characterization where this book fails miserably. It seems Dadi is the only character to which the writer gave any thought while creating. The rest of the characters seem like they were added as an afterthought. First, it is hard to understand where the narrator Saleha is coming from. It is mentioned in the book that she is fourteen years old yet she comes off as a seven year old from her observations. Secondly, Dadi is shown as the leader of the family, yet it is hard to believe that Dadi’s daughter in law, Saleha’s mother is such an angel that she never speaks against her or she is hardly ever seen feeling resentful of her mother in law’s senseless decisions. It seems she has no interest in her children’s lives. Same is the case with Saleha’s father. Also it is implied that Dadi is very strict when it comes to girls upbringing but Saleha and Zeba come off as two modern teenagers belonging to very non conservative households. Nowhere is Dadi seen imposing restrictions on the girl’s dress sense or ways, a trait that is very common in people of her age. The story feels like we are reading a burger’s view of middle class families rather than an actual middle class family. Writing Style The writings style is affected by the weak development of characters and weak narration. This was a story that could have had the power to change the mindset of people who are against love marriages yet it fails to do so because it reads like a high schooler’s point of view. Even the incidents in the book are not funny except for some quotes which I will share. None of the incidents bring a smile to the face. There are some incidents that could have been hilarious but the writing style and dialog kills their essence. Conclusion To be honest, it’s a very disappointing read as a book. However I am sure that if a proper screenplay writer is hired, this novel has the potential of turning into an extremely hilarious Lollywood/ Bollywood movie. Shazaf is a very funny blogger no doubt and I love her for that but I think she needs more polishing to become a writer of substance to rise to the level of Mohsin Hamid, Bapsi Sidhwa, Kamila Shamsie or other seasoned Pakistani writers.
