Leul Fesehaye is a legendary Eritrean singer, songwriter, composer, and kirar musician whose musical legacy spans more than three decades. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential artists in Eritrean modern and traditional music. Leul’s career rose during a defining time in Eritrea’s history. In 1991, as Eritrea achieved independence after 30 years of armed struggle, Leul released one of the most important songs in the country’s cultural memory: “Awlieye Banderana.” The song, included on his first cassette album, became an immediate national anthem of pride. By the 1993 referendum, it had exploded in popularity, symbolizing Eritrean identity, unity, and the flag of freedom.
