African Safari - Lions Eating Buffalo for Breakfast 🇰🇪

After waking up in camp, it was time for a game drive through the Maasai Mara. We were up early, with a 6am departure - the night had been noisy with animal sounds and it was cold, but it was all good nonetheless. The big question: would we be lucky enough to spot all of the Big 5 - Elephant, Lion, Water Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard? We entered the Maasai Mara National Reserve through the Oloolaimuta Gate, and almost immediately were greeted by a giraffe standing tall in the early light. With the sun rising behind it, the view was every bit as spectacular as you'd imagine African sunrises to be. Our driver did a brilliant job getting us up close to the wildlife throughout the day. First up was a herd of Water Buffalo - our first of the Big 5. Not long after, we came across a herd of Elephants, including babies sticking close to their mothers. A genuinely beautiful sight, and the second of the Big 5 ticked off. Then came the highlight of the drive - a pride of Lions feasting on a fresh Buffalo kill. Watching them eat breakfast in the wild was an incredible experience, and our third of the Big 5. After the lions, we made our way to the border between the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti - effectively the line between Kenya and Tanzania. We stopped for lunch in an open area, deliberately chosen for clear visibility in case any wildlife wandered close. We didn't manage to spot a Rhino or Leopard this time, so the full Big 5 stayed just out of reach, but we still saw a huge variety of wildlife along the way, including Cheetah, Ostrich, Topi, Zebra, Hyena and Hippo, among others. The whole experience was incredibly tranquil.
