Making Varnish for the violin
Making Varnish Keep in mind that making varnish can be dangerous because it involves cooking flammable materials on a heat source. If you do this, be careful. Important safety note: Do not add turpentine to hot varnish. If you want to add turpentine, wait until the varnish has cooled to about 100°F (≈38°C). The varnish recipe I’m using is from this website: https://www.ruschil.com/blog/making-v... Recipe: 6 oz linseed oil, 6 oz powdered pine rosin, 0.6 oz mastic. Heat the linseed oil to 350–380°F (≈177–193°C). Add the rosin and allow it to dissolve completely. Mastic burns at high temperature, so let the varnish cool to about 100°C (212°F) before adding the mastic and stirring until it dissolves. Pour the finished varnish into a container using a mesh filter.
