The sales day book is the book of original entry where credit transaction are recorded from copies of invoices issued to debtors before posting to the ledger in chronological order (order of dates). When the goods have been sold on credit to the buyer by the seller, the seller will send the buyer a document showing full details of the goods sold and the prices of the goods. This document is called an ‘invoice’. It is known to the buyer as the purchases invoice and to the seller as a sales invoice. When the seller sells goods on credit to the buyer, the buyer is given the original invoice and the seller remains with the carbon copy. The information that is recorded in the sales invoice is obtained from the carbon copies of the sales invoice.
