My Response to Lecrae's John Piper Video and Why 5-Point Calvinism Generally Fails On Social Issues

A few days ago, Lecrae shared how John Piper and Desiring God deeply shaped his faith, while also explaining why he later needed a broader framework for thinking about justice, race, culture, institutions, and human flourishing. In this video, I argue that his development was understandable and predictable. Christian Hedonism did real good in his life, but the pietistic, five-point Calvinist framework surrounding it was not designed to answer every complex social question. Lecrae and the 116 Clique needed a fuller Reformed theology shaped by Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration, including voices like Dr. Vincent Bacote, who takes culture, public life, institutions, and social ethics seriously. I support Lecrae as a brother, and I am heartbroken by how much suspicion he has endured simply for trying to think honestly about difficult questions.
