Radical Legacies: Living Theatre Founder Judith Malina on Erwin Piscator, November 8th 2012

The Segal welcomes the doyenne of American political theatre, Judith Malina, in a celebration of her recent memoir, The Piscator Notebook. In the Notebook, recently published by Routledge, Malina chronicles her experiences as a student of the Weimar-era political theatre luminary and Bertolt Brecht-contemporary Erwin Piscator, who led a legendary theatre program at the New School after fleeing Nazi Germany. Malina recalls studying with Piscator alongside classmates like Elaine Stritch, Marlon Brando, and Tennessee Williams, and she tells of founding the Living Theatre with Julian Beck while under Piscator’s tutelage. As readers will discover, Malina truly stands at the fountainhead of twentieth century European and American political theatre.
