لماذا استغل تبون قضية وسيم الآن؟ شحن الجزائريين ضد المغاربة أم تغطية على فشله؟

#Morocco #Algeria The Wassim case began as a tragic assault on a 14-year-old boy, and it should have remained within its normal framework: a police investigation, justice, and accountability for the actual perpetrators. However, what happened next was that the incident quickly transformed into a political and media tool. What's striking is not just the public's sympathy for Wassim, which is natural, but that Tebboune himself intervened and commented on the case on the day of the Algerian legislative elections, stating that the Algerian authorities were following up on the matter with the American authorities and that Wassim had been discharged from the hospital. This occurred on the same day that Algeria was holding legislative elections amidst significant public apathy; the AP reported that voter turnout was only around 3% by 10:00 AM, despite the declaration of a national holiday to encourage voting. Herein lies the political significance: when a regime faces a lukewarm, weak, boycotted, or unenthusiastic election, it needs a powerful emotional event to shift the focus of the discussion. Instead of the question being: Why aren't Algerians voting? Why is parliament powerless? Why have people lost faith? The question becomes: What happened to Wassim? Who assaulted him? Why Moroccans? Where is the justice? In political communication, this is called diverting attention and creating emotional mobilization. Tebboune didn't just express human sympathy; he gave the incident the weight of a national issue. When a head of state comments on a case whose key details are still under investigation in a foreign country, and before there is significant American coverage or a final judicial statement, he effectively elevates it from the level of a "criminal incident" to that of a "national issue." This gives the pro-regime media a green light to amplify it. The mechanism here is clear: First: Transforming Wassim from an individual victim into a national symbol. Wassim is no longer just a teenager who was assaulted; he has become "the son of Algeria," a "symbol of Algerians," and "proof that Algerians are being targeted." This is where the victimhood narrative begins: We are an oppressed people, targeted, and everyone is against us. Second: Creating an external enemy. Instead of waiting for the investigation to determine individual responsibilities, the discourse has been directed at Moroccans as a group. Here, specific individuals are not mentioned; rather, people are incited against "Moroccans" as a whole. This is called Othering: creating a villainous other. Third: Exploiting football. Linking Wassim to the Algerian national team and the Algeria-Switzerland match is not just an innocent detail. The national team is the most powerful collective emotional symbol. When you say: Wassim will attend the match and be honored by the team, you are conflating the victim with the flag, the fans, the anthem, and the national identity. Fourth: Covering up the legislative elections. On a day when the discussion should have been about the legitimacy of parliament, participation, boycott, lack of confidence, and the exclusion of some opposition figures, the debate shifted to a highly emotional issue. The Associated Press reported that the elections took place amidst economic hardship, poor services, and political restrictions, with some opposition candidates barred from running. The strong conclusion: Tebboune did not treat Wassim's case as merely a humanitarian issue, but rather intervened at a very sensitive political moment: the day of a lackluster and weak legislative election. Thus, the incident transformed from an attack on a teenager into a national rallying cry, used to emotionally manipulate Algerians, rally support around the regime, and divert attention from the scandal of low voter turnout to the narrative of the "Algerian victim" and the "Moroccan enemy."
