Shore Diving Florida Keys at Horseshoe Beach #floridakeys #shoredive #horseshoebeach

Hey Divers, Snorkelers and Beach Bums, Today, we’re exploring one of the best and easiest shore dives in the Florida Keys—you won’t need that boat, nor seasickness meds, and you won’t max out your credit card to do this dive! Welcome to Horseshoe Beach, it’s a hidden gem just off the Overseas Highway, on the Bay side after Bahia Honda State Park and that famous old railroad bridge, snaking across the sea. Of course we always plan our dives, ideally checking the weather ensuring you have the best experience …. Aim for a sunny, and low wind day for the best visibility. Then, check the tides. My best tip: is to dive the rising or slack tide, when currents will be mild if at all, and the water is much clearer than low tide. Horseshoe Beach is actually an old quarry, cut out to build railroad, and the very highway you will drive in on. That means the bottom is rock and coral rubble, great for marine life and even a ‘muck dive’ !! I found the bottom to be soft silt with some sargassum seaweed and dead grass, try to avoid stirring it up! The max depth is about 30 feet, but for the best fish spotting, i like around around 15 feet, my favorite spots are along the side walls. Speaking of fish: You’ll find parrotfish, mangrove snapper, lobsters, crabs, black groupers and even the occasional goliath grouper just chilling by the rocks. As you start your dive, if you head to the right side, not far in along the bottom you should find an old trailer, with lots of fish around it, i have gone in search of the rumored ambulance sunk in the quarry but did not find it ! Have you found it ? Please let me know !! Pro Tips for the Perfect Shore Dive: Bring a buddy. If you’re certified and equipped for solo diving, you already know the drill. Carry your dive flag and float—it’s not just smart, it’s mandatory! Check your bottom time and monitor your air; max out fun, not your no-deco limit. Pack a beach chair, snacks, and definitely mosquito repellent for your surfaced intervals—or else you’ll be the main course for the local bugs. For families: Horseshoe Beach is famously calm area, protected by the quarry wall, with gentle slopes perfect for snorkeling or just floating the day away. After your dive, head down the road to the Keys Deer Sanctuary for a little post-dive wildlife and maybe a bite to eat. Remember FWC rules include : No spearfishing at this site due to the proximity to a public beach. Never take undersized lobsters, out-of-season lobsters, or any with eggs. Respect the reef, your fellow divers, and the little critters that call it home! “So there you have it — Horseshoe Beach Quarry, one of the few true shore dives in the Florida Keys. Easy access, no boat needed, calm conditions, and a surprising variety of marine life. If you’re looking for a fun day in the water, this is it. I’m Ron and I’ll see you on the next dive.
