In this episode, we'll start from the beginning and explain in a simple way what the retirement system is in the Netherlands, the difference between AOW, service retirement, and social assistance, and why some immigrants might find their retirement less if they don't understand how it's calculated. This series is especially aimed at the Moroccan and Arab community living in the Netherlands, working in the Netherlands, or having family there, who want to understand retirement clearly and in Moroccan Arabic. In this episode, you'll learn: What is retirement in the Netherlands? What is AOW? How are AOW contributions calculated year by year? Why is each year important in calculating retirement in the Netherlands? What is the difference between a state pension and a civil service pension? What is a pension fund? Important information: Retirement in the Netherlands is generally based on three tiers: AOW, which is the basic state pension. Civil service pension, which is contributed by the employer or a pension fund. Individual retirement or private savings, especially for self-employed individuals. Each year you contribute to the AOW system can give you a percentage of your full retirement pension. Therefore, immigrants should understand this point well before approaching retirement age.
