Of course they’ve gone and done it. Someone, somewhere, looked at football and golf—two sports that already involve plenty of shouting, swearing, and deep existential crises—and thought, “Yes. Let’s mash them together and create a pastime that combines aimless wandering with the urge to hoof something very hard.” And lo, footgolf was born. The rules are delightfully straightforward: you take a regular football, stick it on a little plastic tee like it’s about to give a TED Talk, and then attempt to boot it into a hole the size of a small manhole cover, 52 centimetres across, several grassy hills and one minor water feature away. The fewer kicks it takes, the better you are. It’s golf, but with less whispering and more shin splints. The charm of footgolf lies in its ridiculous logic: you need the brute force of a Sunday league centre-back, paired with the gentle finesse of someone trying not to wake a baby. Players come dressed like they’re off to a barbecue afterwards—no boots, just trainers and sporty casuals, like the world’s most athletic PTA meeting. And of course, the course itself is riddled with hazards: bunkers, lakes, trees, and the occasional curious squirrel trying to steal your ball. And at the end of all this gloriously absurd drama, it was the World Number One, Ben Clarke, who triumphed—because of course there’s a World Number One in footgolf. And rightly so.
