Jesus promised that the gates of Hades would not prevail against His church and gave the apostles authority to bind and loose. Using Paul’s instructions to Timothy, Sam Shamoun explains apostolic succession: the apostles entrusted the Christian faith to faithful men, who would preserve it and teach it to future generations. The Holy Spirit did not abandon the church after the apostles died but continued guiding their successors as they defended, explained, and handed down the teachings of Jesus Christ. Sam Shamoun then presents decisive historical evidence from Ignatius of Antioch, a disciple of the apostles who knew the Apostle John. Writing around AD 107–110—more than two centuries before Constantine—Ignatius said that Christians no longer observed the Sabbath but lived according to the Lord’s Day, the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead. The evidence continues with Justin Martyr, writing around AD 150, who stated that Christians everywhere gathered together on Sunday because it was the first day of creation and the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead.
