This is a letter from John Newton titled, By the Grace of God, I am What I am. It was written in June of 1773. John Newton (1725 - 1807) was an English pastor, hymn writer, and former slave ship captain who conversion to Christianity transformed his course of life. He's best known for writing Amazing Grace and later became a strong advocate for the abolition of the slave trade leaving a lasting legacy as a preacher of God's grace and redemption.
