It offers a magnificent view of the surroundings from the top of a hill. It is situated at a height of about 1000 feet above sea level amid lush green Kodyamale hills Commonly known as Sri Karinjeshwara Temple, this beautiful spot is located in the Bantwal taluk. Just 35 km from Mangalore city. Karinja Cliff is also becoming a popular tourist spot. People visit this cliff just to enjoy the fresh air, lush green surroundings of the cool water of this cliff. During the night, watching the electric lamps of the nearby towns, specify like stars, from the top of the cliff is a feast for the eyes. There are about 355 steps to reach this temple. This temple has two parts- one is lord Shiva is on the top of a cliff and the other is for the Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha in the middle of the way to the hill. There are ponds named Gadha teertha at hill bottom, Ungusta theerta at hill middle. This Shiva Temple is influenced by both Vaishnav and Jain styles of Architecture. A stone sculpture on the base of the flag post of the temple indicates that the Kelady rulers, who were under the Vijayanagara kingdom had given royal patronage to this temple. Shivaratri is one of the most important festivals at the Sri Karinjeshwara Temple. On the day of Shivaratri, elaborate poojas are conducted and devotees throng this temple from nearby areas. The ancient practice of feeding apes is still followed inside the temple. They feed monkeys on a daily basis and many devotees are also seen doing the same. Four yugas are mentioned in the Hindu mythology and the Karinjeshwara temple is the testimony to all of them. It is noted that the temple was called ‘Roudra Giri’ during Krutha Yuga’, ‘Bhima Shaila’ in ‘Dwapara Yuga’, Gajendra Giri’ in ‘Thretha Yuga’, and ‘Karinja’ in ‘Kali Yuga’. This is one temple which has been a witness to all the four prominent yugas.
