Why Choosing the Right Gutters Matters in Heavy Rain
If your gutters overflow every time we get one of those summer downpours, you're not alone. Over the last few years, we've seen storms in New Hampshire dump a lot of rain in a short amount of time. Gutters that worked fine 20 years ago are suddenly struggling to keep up. Many homeowners assume they need all new gutters, but that's not always the case. Bigger Isn't Always Better—But Capacity Matters One of the biggest mistakes I see is choosing gutters based only on price. The right gutter system should be sized for: Your roof size Roof pitch Roof valleys Tree coverage Local weather A small ranch with few trees has very different drainage needs than a two-story colonial in Bedford or a lake house in Meredith surrounded by white pines. Why I Recommend 6-Inch Gutters More Than Ever Twenty years ago, we installed far more 5-inch gutters. Today, I recommend 6-inch seamless gutters on most homes we evaluate. Why? Because today's homes often have: Larger roof sections Steeper roof pitches Multiple valleys dumping water into one area Solar panels that change how water sheds More intense summer thunderstorms The cost to upgrade from a 5-inch to a 6-inch gutter during a new installation is usually small, but the extra capacity can make a huge difference when the next storm rolls through. Sometimes You Don't Need New Gutters Here's something many homeowners aren't told. If your existing 5-inch gutters are still in good condition, replacing the entire system may not be necessary. In many cases, we can improve performance by upgrading to: Oversized 3×4 downspouts Wide-mouth outlets High-flow perforated aluminum gutter guards Those upgrades often eliminate the bottleneck that causes overflowing gutters, especially on homes surrounded by New Hampshire's white pine trees. Downspouts Matter More Than Most People Realize Think of your gutter like a highway. The gutter can carry a lot of water, but if all that water has to squeeze through a small outlet and a 2×3 downspout, traffic backs up. That's why oversized downspouts often solve problems that bigger gutters alone cannot. Choosing the Right Gutter Guards Not every gutter guard performs the same in New Hampshire. Around white pines, I've found that perforated aluminum gutter guards usually outperform fine micro-mesh systems. Why? Because they maintain better water flow during heavy rain while allowing long pine needles and sticky pollen to wash over the surface instead of plugging tiny openings. No gutter guard is maintenance-free, but choosing one that's designed for your local environment can make a big difference. Every Home Is Different There isn't one gutter system that's right for every house. A home in Manchester has different drainage challenges than a home in North Conway. A house on the Seacoast deals with different weather than one in the Lakes Region. That's why we evaluate the entire drainage system before making recommendations. Sometimes the best answer is a new 6-inch seamless gutter system. Sometimes it's simply upgrading the downspouts. And sometimes it's just correcting the pitch of the existing gutters. My Advice Don't buy a gutter system because it has the biggest marketing budget. Find a local contractor who understands New Hampshire weather, snow loads, white pine needles, and the heavy summer downpours we've been getting. The best gutter system isn't necessarily the most expensive one. It's the one that's properly designed for your roof and built to move water away from your home. 💬 Have a question about gutters?
