In the design-by-analysis of pressurized equipment, Plastic Collapse failure must be checked in accordance with ASME Section 8, Division 2, Part 5. Also, when the pressurized equipment includes internal or external corrosion, Plastic Collapse must be rechecked. This tutorial explains how to model general and local metal loss (Parts 4 and 5 of API 579) and check the Plastic Collapse failure. The procedure for assessment of Plastic Collapse is similar between API 579 and ASME Section 8. The explanations of both standards will be addressed in the tutorial and applied to both intact and corroded pipes. The procedure of simulating Plastic Collapse is the same for pressurized equipment, whether the structure is intact or not. As the pipe is thin, it will be modeled using shell elements. For the thin equipment, both solid and shell modeling can be used. In shell modeling, there is no need to define elements through the thickness, so the simulation will be much more efficient without sacrificing accuracy.
