Skylar Tang Quartet, presented by 18th Street Arts Center’s Make Jazz Fellowship

Skylar Tang / Trumpet William Schwartzman / Piano John Murray / Bass Ethan Oliver / Drum Skylar Tang is a multidisciplinary musician known for her dynamic trumpet playing and profound compositions. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Tang currently studies History and Jazz Performance at Columbia University and The Juilliard School in New York City. At nineteen-years of age, Tang is one of the brightest young voices in the international jazz scene. She has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Sean Jones, DeeDee Bridgewater, and Rufus Reid, and was featured on Joshua Redman’s latest album, Words Fall Short. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, SFJAZZ, Dizzy’s Club, the Kennedy Center, Monterey Jazz Fest, Davies Symphony Hall, and more. Her international appearances include a two-month residency at Expo 2025 Osaka, and tours in the United States, Europe, and South Africa with Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra Jazz Band. As the winner of the 2022 Essentially Ellington’s Student Composition/Arranging Contest, she conducted and performed her original composition “Kaleidoscope” with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Tang leads her own band, performing in both the Bay Area and New York scenes. As a bandleader and composer, Skylar Tang seeks to capture the moments in our lives where we feel truly present. Her music is about finding peace and chosen community within the frustration of being a young person in today’s world. Tang’s thoughtful composition and her quartet’s elegant delivery cultivate an atmosphere that welcomes and affirms the listener. In her free time, Tang enjoys making collages and longboarding. Skyler Tang’s Make Jazz Fellowship residency is generously supported by the Herb Alpert Foundation.
