In the green folds of Dolenjska, just above Ivančna Gorica, Stična Abbey (Cistercijanska opatija Stična) feels less like a single monument and more like a living system of silence—walls, courtyards, cloisters, gardens, and time. Stična is the oldest monastery on Slovenian territory, and one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers in the country’s medieval story. The monastery’s memory still carries the echo of the Stična Manuscript (1428), among the earliest preserved texts written in Slovene, tying the abbey not only to faith, but also to the roots of language and identity. At the heart of the complex stands the monastery church, known today as the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows (Bazilika Žalostne Matere Božje).
