Are You Spiritually Asleep? John Wesley's Message There is a question most people fear to ask themselves: "What if I'm dead inside and no one, not even me, has noticed yet?" It was precisely this question that, on April 4, 1742, banished a young preacher from the pulpits of Oxford University forever. He was never invited to preach there again. A single incident was enough to cause a scandal among professors, bishops, and future clergy in England. The sermon was titled "Awake, O sleepers!" based on Ephesians 5:14. And most surprisingly, despite having been attributed for centuries to the authority of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, it was actually preached by his brother, Charles Wesley, and later adopted, published, and distributed by John as an official part of his 44 Standard Sermons, the doctrinal foundation of the entire Methodist movement. Stay until the end and you will discover the signs that a soul is asleep, even when you go to church, even when you consider yourself "too religious to worry." We find ourselves in 18th-century England. The Anglican Church was enjoying a period of institutional comfort: the churches were full of baptized, catechized, and confirmed faithful, and, according to the Wesley brothers, fast asleep. In 1742 came the sermon designed to make an impact; the chosen text was brutal in its simplicity: "Wake up, sleepers, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."—Ephesians 5:14. A verse that many scholars believe is a quotation from an ancient baptismal hymn of the early church, perhaps inspired by Isaiah 60:1 and 26:19, incorporated by Paul in his letter to the Ephesians as a reminder: true conversion is a resurrection, not a reformation. This teaches us something about where true spiritual awakening often flourishes: not necessarily in the most prestigious religious spaces, but where there is a genuine willingness to listen, without the defenses of institutional or intellectual pride. And this is, perhaps, the final and most personal provocation of this video: are you willing to listen to this message without the automatic defenses that religious familiarity often generates?
