Prime Minister Holds Expanded Meeting with Ministers to Discuss Mining Sector Regulation and Combating Smuggling and Drugs His Excellency Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris held an expanded meeting today with several ministers and representatives from the police and security services to discuss the challenges related to regulating the mining sector, as well as issues of gold and drug smuggling and ways to address them. Minister of Information, Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities, Mr. Khalid Al-Aisir, stated in a press release that the meeting commended the sincere efforts and sacrifices made by the security, police, and military forces to protect the national economy. He explained that the meeting reviewed the dangers of drug smuggling across Sudanese territory, describing it as part of a multifaceted war targeting the Sudanese people, and specifically the youth. The Minister of Information indicated that the meeting emphasized the necessity of confronting and combating smuggling with full force and prioritizing drug control as a means of protecting national security. He clarified that the meeting stressed the importance of activating information exchange mechanisms between relevant state institutions, in addition to establishing specialized addiction treatment centers, with priority given to young people affected by this phenomenon. In a related context, the Minister of Information, Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities explained that the meeting also discussed the negative repercussions of unregulated mining and its associated services, as well as the necessary measures to mitigate these effects on public health and the environment. Al-Aisir added that His Excellency the Prime Minister directed the removal of mills and basins located in residential areas and military zones, and the urgent regulation of gold markets in production areas. He also emphasized the importance of intensifying media awareness campaigns to highlight the dangers of unregulated mining and the materials used in gold extraction. The meeting stressed the need for the Ministry of Minerals to issue informational brochures on the risks of chemicals used in mining and to deploy awareness teams for miners. The Minister of Information further explained that the meeting affirmed the importance of issuing identification cards for miners and directly educating them about the dangers of hazardous materials used in gold extraction.
