Tawang - land of history, miracles and romance

Short answer, it’s the birthplace of the controversial and notorious 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso. Born in Tawang in 1683, Tsangyang Gyatso was identified as the reincarnation of the highly respected 5th Dalai Lama. The colourful character of the 6th Dalai Lama makes him one of the most well-known Dalai Lamas in the history of the institution. Historically, Tawang and the rest of Arunachal were part of Tibet right up to the time Francis Younghusband sent an expedition in 1904 and turned Tibet into a protectorate of the British Empire. In 1914, the 13th Dalai Lama ceded this part of Tibet to the British in exchange for Tibet's independence.
