With both sides locked in a stalemate on the Western Front, the Gallipoli Campaign was intended to provide an alternative route to victory, but the Ottoman Empire were catastrophically underestimated, and although the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) along with British troops managed to capture their landing beaches they couldn't get much further and within a year the campaign was called off.
