After the collapse of the Golden Horde, Crimea found itself at a crossroads of interests. Trade routes between the East and Europe passed through the peninsula, and power was shared among the descendants of the Golden Horde, Genoese merchants, and Lithuanian princes. Turkic tribes lived in the steppes, Greeks and Genoese on the coast, and Karaite and Armenian communities in the mountainous regions. When the Horde's influence finally weakened, it was here that a new state emerged—the Crimean Khanate. Its emergence marked the beginning of a long era in which the peninsula ceased to be a marginalized territory and became an independent power.
