【美しき日本伝統技術】うるしの彩り~漆黒と金銀が織りなす美の世界~|『陶芸家』岡田嘉夫
Born the eldest son of a lacquer artist, Okada studied lacquer at high school in Kyoto and university in Yamagata. Since graduating, Yoshio Okada has been restoring lacquer and creating artworks. Okada is not just a lacquer artist. He is also a maki-e artist. Maki-e is the only technique that can add colour to lacquer and express the beauty of the world of jet-black, gold and silver. The maki-e technique is unique to Japan and dates back some 1,200 years. The maki-e culture that flourished in the Nara and Heian periods was favoured by the nobility and was even used for temple interiors, and from the Kamakura to the Azuchi-Momoyama periods, maki-e became popular with the shogunate. In the Edo period (1603-1868), wealthy merchants and merchants introduced maki-e lacquered furnishings and accessories into their daily lives. These maki-e lacquered lacquerware items are a unique Japanese technique and were exported to many foreign countries, where they are still popularly known as 'makie'.
