🇮🇹 Roofless Church in Tuscany: Abbey of San Galgano walking tour April 2023 4K HDR Siena Italy

The Abbey of San Galgano was founded around the former hermitage of Galgano Guidotti. Construction of the church began in 1220 and was completed six decades later. The abbey grew wealthy and had ties with the Republic of Siena. However, it was plundered by John Hawkwood and his troops in 1363, leaving only the abbot behind. For nearly four centuries, the abbey remained impoverished and deteriorated. Cardinal Giuseppe Maria Feroni briefly served as abbot in the 18th century. In 1786, the bell tower collapsed, causing the church's roof to fall. The ruins were later looted for building materials. Some restoration work took place in the 19th and 20th centuries, but the church remains in ruins. The nave, windows, apse rose window, chapter house, and part of the scriptorium still stand.
