The collapse of his empire left a historical power vacuum in the Prey Nokor region. Tran Thuong Xuyen (c. 1655–1720) – A Ming Dynasty general from Guangdong, he was 24 years old when he led over 3,000 Chinese refugees to Dang Trong (Southern Vietnam) in 1679. He established Cu Lao Pho in Bien Hoa – the precursor to what would later become Saigon-Cholon. Princess Ngoc Van (c. 1600–?) – Daughter of Lord Nguyen Phuc Nguyen, she married King Chey Chettha II of Cambodia in 1620. Mạc Cửu (1655–1735) — A Chinese merchant who pioneered Hà Tiên, in 1708 offered land to the Nguyễn lords, representative of the model of Chinese settlement in Southern Vietnam. Vương Hồng Sển (1902–1996) — A Minh Hương scholar who lived to be 94 years old, author of Sài Gòn Năm Xưa (1960), who dedicated his life to researching the history and culture of Southern Vietnam and honestly admitted that the mystery of the name Saigon has not yet been definitively solved.
