Obrona Poczty Polskiej w Gdańsku. Dr Jan Szkudliński
The right to its own postal organization in the Free City of Danzig was granted to Poland by the Treaty of Versailles and subsequent agreements. Throughout the interwar period, the Polish postal organization was a source of conflict. The Germans in Danzig believed that the existence of a post with its own headquarters, accepting visitors, constituted an overreach of Polish authority. Polish preparations for the outbreak of war included the defense of two locations in the Free City of Danzig: the Westerplatte peninsula and the main building of the Polish Post Office. The postal staff was gradually reinforced, and in April 1939, an intelligence officer was sent there to prepare the post's defense. The fate of the defenders of the Polish Post Office was tragic compared to the defenders of Westerplatte. After the capitulation, they were tried and sentenced to death. Only four of the more than fifty-member staff survived the war.
