PAUL CHAIN- Abyss/ I Remember A Black Mass
Italian Doom/ Space Metal from Ancona, Marche. From 1988 "Ash" EP Paul Chain aka Paolo Catena used to be guitarist of early Death SS, Horror Metal legend from Italy. After leaving them he formed Paul Chain´s Violet Theatre (1984), but, after recording 2 EPs and 2 longplayers he decided to use only Paul Chain as moniker in 1987. Their debut, a split with Sabotage (I) is from 1987. Several EPs (this one was the first), singles, splits and compilations followed, next to 12 studio albums. They disbanded after the last album in 2004; Paul turned his name to Paul Cat and runs a (non-Metal) band called "P.C. Translate" Over the years Paul Chain got more spacy, his LPs contained a lot of (great) instrumental works next to Doom anthems; another aspect is that Paul uses a language that does not exist, he sings just phonetic sounds that fit to the music. The band used several monikers for their outputs; i.e. their live name was Paul Chain- The Improvisor. Maybe Paul is one of the most underrated musicians and artists of our time, but is seems that he decided to go that underground way by limited editions and small copy quantities, and that makes his star even shine brighter and brighter in my eyes!
