The lowest layer of the Amazon. The ground and waterfront may seem safe, but it's the most dangerous hunting ground in the forest. The Amazon rainforest is divided into many layers. The lowest layer, where the ground and water meet, seems like the safest place at first glance. However, it's also the most brutal hunting ground in the entire forest. This land is ruled by the jaguar, the strongest predator both on land and in water. Its bite can crush the skull of its prey. At the water's edge, the anaconda, one of the heaviest snakes on Earth, lies in wait for its prey. In the murky waters, electric eels emit invisible currents, and packs of giant otters, known as "river wolves," overwhelm even the most fearsome creatures. However, many of the creatures living in the lowest layer are not predators. Without fangs, claws, or venom, they must find their own answers to survival. The tapir, South America's largest land mammal, disappears into the water when it senses danger. Capybaras surrender to the vigilance of their entire herd, while peccaries deliberately turn and choose to confront. Giant anteaters wield their sharp claws, leafcutter ants survive in societies of millions, and poison dart frogs wear their vibrant colors as a warning. And deep within the murky waters, Amazon river dolphins "see" the world with sound instead of eyes. At this lowest level, the forest's stratification doesn't create hiding places, but rather presents each species with different survival challenges. This is a brutal struggle for survival, and through each species that has survived to this day, the harsh reality of the natural world—the survival of the fittest—is laid bare.
