Driving in The Philippines - What You Need to Know Before You Dive
Thinking about renting a car in the Philippines? đ Before you jump into the driverâs seat, there are a few things you should knowâespecially if youâre headed to Cebu! In this video, Iâll walk you through my experience of renting and driving a car on this beautiful island, and trust me, itâs not all smooth highways and scenic coastlines. From the bustling streets of Cebu City to winding coastal roads, driving here can be both an adventure and a challenge. First, let me share a bit about what itâs like to actually rent a car in Cebu. Itâs not just about picking up a set of keysâthere are plenty of things to keep in mind, like dealing with rental agencies, understanding their insurance policies, and knowing what documents you need. Iâll also cover the essentials like whether you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) and some tips for picking the right rental company (because let's face it, nobody wants their trip ruined by hidden fees or unreliable vehicles). Once youâre on the road, youâll quickly notice that driving in Cebu is a mix of beauty and unpredictability. In the video, I dive into the local driving cultureâfrom the polite honks of jeepneys, tricycles zipping by, to the occasional (okay, more than occasional) pothole. Cebuâs roads will throw challenges your way, but they also provide some of the most amazing views and the freedom to explore off-the-beaten-path spots that are harder to reach without a car. Navigating traffic in Cebu City is an experience of its own. The streets can be chaotic, filled with jeepneys, motorcycles, pedestrians, and, yes, even dogs that seem to think they own the road. đ But once you make it out of the city, itâs a different storyâthe rural roads take you to some breathtaking places, where youâll find stunning coastal views, charming villages, and lush highlands. Having your own car means you get to stop whenever you want, take in the views, and maybe discover some hidden gems that the usual tourist itineraries miss. I also talk about parkingâanother part of driving that can be surprisingly challenging. Spoiler alert: there arenât a lot of big parking lots, and people often park halfway onto the road, creating a bit of an obstacle course. But there are usually parking attendants around to help guide you (for a small fee), which makes the whole experience feel like a team effort. The main question Iâm answering here is: Is renting a car in Cebu worth it? And my honest answer is yesâitâs totally worth it. You just have to be prepared for some unexpected situations. In return, youâll get to see parts of Cebu that many people miss and have the freedom to explore at your own pace. The highs outweigh the bumps, and if youâre up for a bit of an adventure, itâs an experience you wonât forget. If youâre thinking about renting a car in the Philippines, especially in Cebu, make sure to watch this video until the end. Iâve packed it with helpful tips, personal stories, and everything I wish Iâd known before I started driving here.
