Carnival is one of the best known popular festivals in the western world, being the biggest festivity in Brazil. Its origin dates back to the Middle Ages and has direct association with Christianity. Carnival arrived in Brazil during the colonial period, characterized by various games, such as Shrovetide. Throughout the 20th century, a series of rhythms and dances became part of the Brazilian Carnival. Currently, rhythms such as samba, maracatu and frevo are its symbols. Carnival became the main popular Brazilian festival from the 1930s onwards and currently has street blocks that take place in the country's major centers, as well as the parades of samba schools.
