Da semplice sito di prelievo di arenaria necessaria per la costruzione dei palazzi nobiliari di un tempo, si è trasformata, via via, in luogo di residenza di una vitale piccola ma importante comunità di pescatori, che, di volta in volta, hanno saputo essere inventori di sistemi di pesca e scopritori di banchi di più efficace sfruttamento. La iniziale piccola comunità, cresciuta intorno all’attività di pesca dell’antica tonnara di Solanto – una delle più antiche tonnare fisse dell’isola-, si è evoluta nel tempo, affrontando, un po’ per necessità e un po’ per voglia di nuove esperienze imprenditoriali, anche il campo della prima conservazione e trasformazione del pescato. The hamlet of Porticello in the municipality of Santa Flavia, from time immemorial owes its economy to fishing and its related activities. From a simple sandstone sampling site necessary for the construction of the noble palaces of the past, it has gradually transformed into the place of residence of a vital small but important fishing community, which, from time to time, have been able to be inventors of fishing systems and discoverers of shoals of more effective exploitation. The initial small community, which grew up around the fishing activity of the ancient tuna fishery of Solanto - one of the oldest fixed tuna traps on the island - has evolved over time, facing, a little out of necessity and a little out of desire to new entrepreneurial experiences, including the field of the first conservation and transformation of the fish.
